Living House In Ringaudai

Private House in “Žemyna” Residential District, Akademija

Location: Akademija, Kaunas District
Architect: Laurynas Avyžius

Location and Context

The house sits in the “Žemyna” residential area of Akademija, Kaunas District. Three sides of the plot face neighboring buildings, while the fourth opens to a peaceful forest. This natural feature inspired the L-shaped design, which frames an inner courtyard and provides a direct connection to the greenery.

Layout and Organization

Facing the longer edge of the street, the building presents a solid, monolithic façade. It’s a single-storey home with a two-car garage and a subtle, calm expression. A concrete roof canopy emphasizes the entrance and guides visitors inside.

Once inside, the layout splits into two clear directions:

  • Turning right leads to the private zone with three bedrooms, a spacious bathroom, and a primary bedroom that includes a walk-in wardrobe.

  • Turning left, the hallway passes the garage and a sanitary room, eventually opening to a shared living areathat includes the kitchen, dining, and lounge. This space extends to the outdoors, with large windows offering uninterrupted views of the inner courtyard and the natural landscape.

Materials and Design Language

The architecture uses just two primary materials: thermo wood and concrete. Warm, diamond-patterned thermo wood wraps the structure, creating a tactile contrast to the raw monolithic concrete roofs. These roofs extend from interior to exterior, enhancing the sense of continuity and architectural depth.

Moreover, vertical LED strips and narrow windows break up the long elevation, giving rhythm to the façade. The surrounding metal fence echoes this verticality, reinforcing the home’s unified visual identity.

Summary

This residence carefully balances privacy, minimalism, and contextual awareness. It opens toward nature, provides clearly separated functional zones, and uses a restrained material palette to communicate both warmth and strength. The result is a modern, grounded home that offers comfort without compromising on architectural clarity.
